After an exciting introduction to cyclocross last weekend at Ormeau Park I was looking forward to getting back in the saddle. Fast forward a week and I was lining up for my 2nd cyclocross race of the year. Foyle CC were the hosts with the race taking place in St. Columb’s Park, Derry/Londonderry, the course was amazing in my opinion and had some really fun technical sections which I got a little carried away on!
Lined up ready to get started I was itching to go – mainly to try warm up in the cold conditions! The flag dropped and we were off! After a chaotic first lap battling for positions I managed to make my way into the lead. Not for long though after making a silly mistake on a tight corner I was on the ground before I knew it causing a pile up, sorry Barry! After that I saw myself in 4th place but determined to make up as much time as I could.
I settled into a comfortable pace whilst trying to make up as much time as I could on the technical sections. I found my MTB skills really helped on the descents and I looked forward to the two tricky sections every lap, it almost made the climbs before hand worth it.
With every passing lap I could see that I was closing the gap and I was able to regain the lead in the 2nd to last lap. I give it one final push on the last lap and held Darnell and James off to take the win. I was thrilled to take the win after crashing at the start and I was really happy with how my form was throughout the race. I felt like I was getting stronger as the race went on, the polar opposite of how I felt last weekend ha!
I am really happy with the win and already looking forward to the next one, I’m hooked! Thanks again to Foyle CC for hosting a great race and taping out an incredible course which I thoroughly enjoyed!
