It was the perfect start for my Enduro campaign with a 1st place at round one of the Vitus First Tracks Enduro Cup at Castlewellan. This was the first Enduro race of the season for myself and I was excited to get going.
The weekend kicked off with practice on Saturday and I set off early to scope out all the stages. Glyn and his team at First tracks done an amazing job putting together 6 stages with a mix of trail centre and natural single track to test both skill and fitness.
I really enjoyed myself during practice, I was blown away by how technical some of the natural stuff was, the Nukeproof Mega AM was loving it. I had so much fun I had to do each stage twice! After practice was finished I was itching to get going on Sunday.
Race day started with a bit of a disaster for me when I caught my rear maxle on a rock on the way to stage one. After sourcing a replacement I headed on my way leaving the pits at around 12.45pm. (2 1/2 hours after checking into the first liaison stage). From here on the race went well for me, I kept it clean and safe on the technical sections and opened it up on the pedally sections. I had one big mistake on stage 5 but apart from that I was really happy with how I was riding. I had to rush around the course to try and meet the 4 hr time limit due to my mechanical at the start of the day, I completed the loop 20 minutes over the allocated time and received a 20 second time penalty. I was excited to find out I held onto 1st place. It was a great start to the season for me and I am already looking forward to the next round.
Next race for me will be the first round of the Gravity Enduro in Wicklow on the 11/12th April. Thanks to all my sponsors for their support this season, Nukeproof, Bell Helmets, Schwalbe, Mucky Nutz, SRAM, Ride 100%, Point1 Athletic Development, MellowVELO
